ABSTRACT:

Background of the Study: A man’s life is normally divided into five stages namely: infancy, childhood, Adolescence, adulthood and old age. Every stage has its significance in terms of biological and psychological transition which in-turn influences the behaviour, among these stages the pivotal transformation occurs between childhoods to adolescence, which is also termed as biological stress. Hormones for the first time appear and change the internal environment and in-turn influence psychological composure of an individual, this influence can be in positive or in negative way1. AIM: Aim of study is to assess and compare emotional maturity of boys and girls nursing student from selected nursing college of latur. Method: In this study a total of 120 samples were chosen using non probability convenient sampling, structured Emotional maturity scale was administered to assess emotional maturity among boys and girls of Nursing college. Result: From the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that Highest Percentage (86%) boys are emotionally mature and remaining (14%) are emotionally immature. Highest percentage (95%) girls are emotionally mature and remaining (5%) are emotionally immature. Independent ‘t’ – test was computed results revealed there was a significant difference in Emotional Maturity between Boys and Girls Nursing students. To find association with level of Emotional maturity and selected personal demographic variables Chi-Square was computed, results revealed that there was significant association with personal variables like Age and Family income. Conclusion: The study revealed that emotional maturity is having a profound impact on boys and girls and it Revealed that girls had higher emotional maturity compare to boys. The result also demonstrates that the Questionnaire was effective for comparing the emotional Maturity in between boys and girls among the nursing student at M.I.N.S college Latur.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:

A Comparative study to assess the Emotional maturity between Boys and Girls nursing student from selected nursing college of latur.

 

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:

1.   To assess the emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students from selected nursing colleges of latur.

2.   To compare the emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students.

3.   To find association between the emotional maturity among nursing students with their selected personal variables

 

THE HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY:

The following hypotheses were formulated and were tested at 0.05 level of significance.

H1:   There will be significant difference in Emotional maturity between Boys and Girls Nursing students.

H2:   There will be significant association between the emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students with their selected personal variables

 

METHODOLOGY:

A Comparative study was conducted to assess the difference in emotional maturity between Boys and Girls Nursing students from selected Nursing college of Latur. Formal administrative permission was obtained from the authority of  Selected Nursing colleges of Latur. 120 Nursing students (60 Boys and 60 Girls) were selected using Non-Probability convenient sampling. Data was  collected  regarding  Emotional maturity of Boys and Girls Nursing students by administering Modified Emotional Maturity questionnaire and was  analyzed  by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

 

RESULTS:

The objectives of the study were as follows:

1.   To assess the emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students from selected nursing colleges of latur.

2.   To compare the emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students.

3.   To find association between the emotional maturity among nursing students with their selected personal variables

 

The hypotheses of the study were as follows:

Section-1

Description of Selected Personal Variables of Study Subjects:

The study sample consists of 120 B.Sc (60 Boys and 60 Girls) Nursing students from selected Nursing colleges at Latur. The selected personal variables of B.Sc Nursing students are given under the sub-headings viz. Age in years, gender, class of study, type of family and family income per month etc. The data related to the frequency and percentage distribution of samples according to their selected personal variables is presented in table -1.

The data presented in the Table 1 and Figure 1 shows that, the age of students varied from 19 -25 years and above, in the boys group maximum students 32 (53.33%%) were in the age group of 22 to 24 years , and in girls group majority 31 (51.6%) students were in the age group of 19 to 21 years.

As seen in the Table 1 and figure 2, in boys group majority 48(80 %) students belonged to Hindu followed by 10 (16.66%) belonged to Muslim religion and 2(3.33) belonged to Christian. In girls group 56 (93.33%) belonged to Hindu followed by 2 (3.33%) belonged to Christian and 2(3.33%) Muslim religion.

With regard to class of study, Table 1 and Figure 3 shows that, in case of class of study, among Boys group 15 students were choosen from each class of B.Sc and in case of Girls 15 each students belonged from 1st year to 4th year B.Sc Nursing.

With regard to place of residence, Figure 4 shows that, maximum members, in boys group 41(68.33%) and in girls group 41 (68.33%) were residing in rural area, followed by 16 (26.6%) in boys and 18 (30%) in girls group were from Urban area, least that is, 03 (05%) in boys group and 01 (1.6%) in girls group were residing in semi-urban area.

As seen in the Table 1 and Figure 5, majority in boys group 52 (86.6%) belonged to nuclear family followed by 8(13.3%) were from Joint family and in girls group 51(85%) belonged to nuclear family, followed by 9 (15%) were from Joint family.

As shown in Table 1 and Figure 6, in boys group, majority of students 56 (93.3%) had the family income of above Rs 10001per month, followed by 4(6.66%) had the income Rs 5001-10000 per month, in girls group 43 (71.66%) had the income Rs more than 10001per month, followed by 17 (28.3%) had their family income of Rs 5000-10000 per month.

As seen in the Table 1 and figure 7, in boys group majority 33 (55%) were second child in the family followed by 27 (45%) were first child in the family, in girls group majority 28(46.66%) were second child in the family, followed by 26 (43.33%) were first child in the family.

With regard to parent`s education, Table 1 and Figure 8 shows that, maximum mothers in boys group 53 (88.3%) were educated till junior college followed by 4 (6.66%) had their education till degree and above and least 3 (5%) had their education till high school and primary education and in girls group majority of the mothers were educated till junior college 23(38.33%) followed by 20 (33.33%) had primary education  and least were educated till high school and 17 (28.3%) had their education till degree and above.

In the category of experience as class representative as per Table no-1 and Figure no-9, in the boys group majority 32 (53.33%) were having experience as class representative, in girls group majority 32 (53.33%) does not have experience as class representative.

 

Section-2

Description of Emotional Maturity of Nursing Students:

a)     Mean, median, range and standard deviation of Emotional maturity

The emotional maturity scores obtained from the nursing students were tabulated into a master sheet and mean, median, SD and range were computed. The findings are represented in Table-2

The data presented in Table -3 shows that the Mean Emotional maturity score of Boys was 128.133 with standard deviation + 8.319 and Range between 92-199, While in case of Girls the Mean Emotional maturity was 120.516 with Standard Deviation of + 7.415 and Range between 92-144.

 

b. Comparison of emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students.

In order to compare the levels of emotional maturity of Boys and Girls nursing students, Table 3 is prepared from the master data sheet, depending up on the scores they students were classified as Low and High Emotional maturity as per the obtained scores

The data presented in the table - 3 shows that the level of emotional maturity scores experienced by the Boys and Girls Nursing student’s majority, In Boys group Majority 52 (86.66 %) had emotional maturity and 08 (13.33%) had emotional immature and in Girls group Majority 57 (95%) had emotional maturity and 03 (05%) had emotional immaturity.

 

Section-3: Findings Related to Difference in Emotional Maturity Between Boys and Girls Nursing Students

In order to find the difference in emotional intelligence between Boys and Girls nursing students, un-paired ‘t’ – test was computed.

 

To test the statistical significance, the following null hypothesis was stated

 

H01: There will be no significant difference in mean emotional maturity scores of Boys and girls Nursing Students.

The data presented in the Table 4 shows that the mean difference of emotional maturity scores of Boys and Girls nursing students is 128.133 and 120.51 respectively with mean difference 7.6166.

 

To find the significance of difference in mean emotional maturity scores among Boys and Girls Nursing students group, an independent ‘t’ test was computed and obtained value of independent ‘t’(118) = 2.586 p>0.05 is found to be significant. Hence the results did not support null hypothesis H01and research hypothesis is accepted. It is inferred that there is significant difference in mean Emotional maturity scores between Boys and Girls Nursing students.    

 

Section-4
Association Between the Emotional Intelligence of boys and girls Nursing Students with Their Selected Personal Variables.

 

a)    Association between Emotional Maturity of nursing students with their selected personal variables.

To find out the association between Emotional Maturity of Nursing students with their selected personal variables, chi square was computed and following null hypothesis is stated.

 

H02: There will be no significant association between the Emotional Maturity of nursing students with their selected personal variables.

The findings related to association Emotional Maturity of nursing students with their selected personal variables are presented in Table-4

The data presented in the table-4 shows that, There was significant association between Emotional Maturity of nursing students with their personal variables such as age and Family income was found to be significant while other variables like Religion, class of study, Mother’s education, type of family etc were not significant. Hence the Research hypothesis (H2) is partially accepted.
